Butterflies, perfectly content

I like butterflies. They look like fluttering blooms and always cheer me up.

A little while ago I was watching a butterfly feeding on my yellow lantanas – for a long time. A pretty little creature was going from one flower to another – for several minutes.

Then another black swallowtail joined the first one and for several moments they were dancing together above all the little round flower beds in my backyard. After a while they both went to their primary activity of visiting all the new blossoms.

While standing next to the kitchen window, observing butterflies feed and play, the thought came to my mind that made me smile even bigger. They are all so perfectly content, these blissful creatures, leading a simple life. Every moment of their day is a new experience and they never regret their past – or worry about their future.

Like it already happened

They never think about the lack of flowers – or if the sun will come up next morning. Every second in their life is enjoyable and they are perfectly content in the present moment.

My train of thoughts then wondered into comparing my life with the life of the butterflies.

I can also be content with everything my life brings me. At least most of the time. I can be happy exactly where I am and I can appreciate many things in my life. I can always close my eyes and go any place, be with anyone, do anything that makes my heart sing.

In other words, I can feel as if something that matters to me, already happened – and be happy about it – if only I choose to do so.

Besides, anything can be a reason for happiness!

I can hardly believe a year has already gone by. So much has happened in this past year its kind of hard to grasp reality of it all. Its been a very bittersweet year. All in the same year we had amazing things happen like buying.…

Pine Island – a popular sunset observation point in Hernando County

Map of Florida highlighting Hernando County

Map of Florida highlighting Hernando County (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

At the north end of Hernando County’s Road 495, west of Weeki Wachee in Hernando County, Florida, there’s a is a 3-acre (12,000 m2) area on the Gulf of Mexico – with a beach, picnic tables, shelters, barbecue grills, sunset observation point, playground and concession stand.

I was in the neighborhood, so to speak, and instead of turning right to go home, I turned west and headed toward the coast. Looking at the sun, it seemed to me there had to be about half hour before the sunset. Pine Island is a place when one can easily take good pictures and I was in a mood to do that once again, to walk around the breezy beach, and soak up some salt-scented ocean air.

The first thing that caught my attention as I was still driving toward the parking lot in the park, were blooming oleanders. I’ve seen them all numerous times before, they come in white, pink and red and they bloom pretty much all year round. But I’ve never seen such an abundance of blooms before. To me, they were quite a breathtaking sight.

After parking, I took some close-up pictures of the magnificent blooms and started my observation and deep-slow-breathing walk on the east side of the beach. It wasn’t too crowded – which is always my preference – but there were still swimmers in the water and three fishermen looked like they weren’t bothered by the cool wind, while standing in the chest-high water. I couldn’t help myself but admire their passion for fishing.

There were too many people all around the observation station so I couldn’t get a good shot from there. But there were plenty of other points available – from which the view of the setting sun was just as good, so I kept walking. Paying a lot more attention to the scenery than people, I still noticed that everyone seemed to be taking photos and their cameras were flashing all over the place.

Seagulls are to me well familiar residents of the Pine Island and I like to catch them in the background of my photos. Yesterday, however, they were all up in the air, flying back and forth across the island and singing a high-volume ode to the brightly-red colored sunset.

But Pine Island is not only a highly photogenic place for photographers with any level of skills, but also a family-friendly place, favorite of amateur sand sculpturers, and a popular destination for sunset weddings on the beach.

New blooms this morning

I love to walk around the house every morning and check on all of my plants and look for new blooms. Especially when morning are still fresh and young, there’s nothing that cheers me more than looking at all the new flowers and buds.

This morning there were several surprises waiting for me. All four different rose bushes, growing around my house, seemed to decide to outperform themselves this spring. Their buds are more plentiful than ever before, and blooms are bigger and more beautiful, too.

To me, that’s an energizing thrill, seeing new blooms early in the morning. And besides, my roses’ scent is divine this time of the day! Hot midday sun kind of takes it away.

I can’t help myself but be in awe over the red flowers of Cinco De Mayo rose. The color of the petals is so vibrant that they are glistening in the sun and the blooms look different and more beautiful every time I see them. This rose bush blooms, then grows new buds, and blooms again – all season long. When I bought it at the local nursery last spring, it added an instant splash of color and never stopped blooming since – even though I had to transplant it into a much larger pot.

I love new blooms! :)
