After the rain

With the beautiful spring weather and warm, sunny days – the whole nature springs back into life – literally overnight here in Florida. The grass that was pretty much brown and dead yesterday, turned green after the rain this morning.

For some time now I’ve been waiting for a cloudy, cool day, to go out and do some cleaning up in the yard. And after I spent all day long on the computer yesterday, today was a perfect time to take a break and spend some time outside.

I decided to make things easier on myself this year. Instead of keeping so many plants in all kinds of pots and planters all around the house, which need to be watered twice a day when it gets really hot, I’ll plant only certain kinds of plants in my flower beds.

So this season my choice of plants will be flowers that won’t require my constant attention like marigolds, certain kinds of petunias, Mexican petunias and the cone flowers (Echinacea).

In between the flowers I’m going to plant certain herbs as groundcovers and that should take care of preserving moisture and covering any bare spots on the ground. In my experience lemon balm does particularly good. Even when it freezes, it comes right back once it gets warm again. Another herb I very much enjoy and have planted all around the house is rosemary herb, mints are fast growing and rapidly spreading as well, thyme seems to be indestructible and chives plants are aways great to have around.

Anyhow, my yard looks a lot better now than it did this morning! Life is beautiful… 🙂
