What to do in stormy weather

We had some really stormy weather today – (central) Florida style. It looked a lot like a hurricane – with heavy rains, wind gusts and tornado warnings.

When I had to go out this morning I’ve seen some trees and signs down. All the retention ponds and ditches were filled with water and many yards and roads were flooded.

I was more than happy to get back home and enjoy my day in a different way than I usually do.

Most of the people are complaining about the weather like this and some seem to be scared of it. I, on the other side, find it kind of calming, relaxing. Mother nature is powerful and during the powerful storm it feels to me like the time has stopped and all there is to do is to wait until the storm is over.

So I took a chance and played with my Kindle. The first of the classics that caught my attention were fables by Aesop (620 BC to 560 BC). I thought that would be an easy and fun reading for a day like this and I was right. Some of the fables that I haven’t read in years made me laugh. Some of the morals I agreed with and others I didn’t.

My today’s favorite fable is the one I’m sharing with you below – and I couldn’t agree more with the moral of the story

A stag saw his shadow reflected in the water, and greatly admired the size of his horns, but felt angry with himself for having such weak feet. While he was thus contemplating himself, a lion appeared at the pool. The Stag betook himself to flight, and kept himself with ease at a safe distance from the Lion, until he entered a wood and became entangled with his horns. The Lion quickly came up with him and caught him. When too late, he thus reproached himself: Woe is me! How I have deceived myself! These feet which would have saved me I despised, and I gloried in these antlers which have proved my destruction.

Moral:

What is most truly valuable is often underrated.

The stormy weather seems to be over, at least around here. Tomorrow we are about to have another beautiful day with perfect temperature and blue skies (also Florida style!) – and I might find another gem description, fable or tale in one of the classic books on my favorite Kindle Wireless Reading Device, Wi-Fi, Graphite, 6″ Display with New E Ink Pearl Technology
