How hurricane weather affects people

Ever since the hurricane Irene first hit the news, I’ve been receiving this email, saying, “Why are the Floridians having all the fun while we’re up north?”

Of course, that’s only some sarcasm from the so-called “snowbirds,” people who spend their winter in Florida and return up north in spring.

Personally, I’ve been admiring the storms for as long as I can remember. They are powerful and have kind of a calming effect on me.

The visual effect of the stormy weather on the nature is also something that I very much enjoy to observe. The trees, moving with the winds – greatly impress me. And then there’s that contrasting – and at the same time so perfectly color-coordinated – image of the bright green tree tops against the dark grey sky. Just beautiful!

I know there are people, afraid of the storms. I even know some families who moved out of the state – after 2004 busy (for Florida) hurricane season – because they wouldn’t be able to go through another wild storm. But even those who don’t panic when another tempest is approaching – are definitely affected by it.

For the last few days I heard several people talking about things that they plan to postpone if the hurricane Irene happens to head our way. It seems to me that the strong weather is one of the few things that have power to slow down the human physical activity in general.

Hopefully, some of the people who have to slow down due to severe weather conditions – will use that time to think about some meaningful things they have in their lives – and deeply and genuinely appreciate them.
