What a difference a day made…

This time of the year it seems to me like my part of Central Florida turns all quiet and uneventful. Pretty much all of the Snowbirds are gone – or are on their way to their northern, summer homes.

However, this is also the time of the year when mornings and evenings are still nice and fresh, when I open all the windows every morning and my summer-blooming plants are in a great hurry to grow.

Every morning, usually still in my PJ, I walk around the house and check on every single plant, feeling amazed ‘what a difference a day made, twenty-four little hours’… 😉

There’s always something new to admire. More dark-red/purple color on my new Canna Yellow King Humbert plant leaf, my Cat Tails getting bigger so fast I can almost see them growing, my other pond plant, Pickerel Rush developing a new, perfectly heart-shaped leaf…

During the day (and heat) I stay inside and do my computer work. Once it gets close to 7 PM, I go out again to do the watering and pruning and weeding and deadheading – whatever calls me the most persistently that day. And that’s also the time when something new started happening to me recently. Some very colorful and cheerful birds have been coming to play with me.

The first day it was a red robin, dancing and singing his heart out – on the branch of the small turkey oak – right in front of my face, only a few feet away. His performance looked quite awe-inspiring and after watching for some time, I went in to get a camera. The bird then flew away to another tree, just far enough I couldn’t take a picture – and sang even louder… 🙂

And last night there was a blue jay who landed on the ground, just a few feet away from me. His colors were brilliantly shiny. He was totally ignoring me (little show-off!). He ruffled up his feathers, confidently walked in every direction – so I was able to fully notice his beauty – and then flew away. Every time though, the birds were close to me for long enough – that I had a chance to get a good look, like never before.

The last thing I do almost every night before I go back in the house is – I do some biking. Most of the time I ride a bike up and down our street and around the block. After it gets dark and if I still have some energy, I ride a few laps around the house.

That is a more challenging trail because of the uneven ground so I have to pedal harder and watch for all the planters, flower beds and low-hanging tree branches. It’s almost like an obstacle course – but I truly enjoy it. Thereupon, when I’m done, certain parts of my body feel painful and my legs are shaky. Perfect time to go straight to the bathroom and soon to bed.

I decided I’d go swimming more often this summer. It’s one of those things I enjoy beyond description. To me, floating in the warm, crystal-clear water equals the “I think I can fly” feeling. No wonder so many people call me a mermaid – and not just because I live in Weeki Wachee, the City of Live Mermaids, on the Gulf Coast of Florida…. 😉

In the housekeeping area I am dealing with raccoons for the first time in my life. I just didn’t have the slightest idea how much mess they can make. The local waste management is picking up our trash twice a week. Their truck comes down our street early in the morning – so we’ve been taking our trash can out the night before – for the last four years.

Although this house is practically surrounded by woods – and three of my neighbors even saw a black bear at night – we’ve never had any troubles, caused by wildlife – until recently. A few times in a row now – we found our trash all over the yard in the morning. I googled ‘raccoons’ and found a few solutions other people discovered to be successful in keeping them away. I have yet to test them but will let you know how that adventure of mine goes.

In the meantime, here’s a story of some other pests that kept bugging me for two years in a row – until an unexpected helping hand took care of the issue:

AN OLD FRIEND SHARED WITH ME YEARS AGO WHEN I HAD TO CLOSE OUR RESTAURANT IN ORMOND BEACH AFTER LOOSING A GREAT DEAL OF MONEY HE TOLD ME THIS ” IT’S A GREAT LIFE AS LONG AS YOU DON’T LET IT GET YOU DOWN” AND AFTER GIVING WHAT HE SAID A LOT OF THOUGHT IT MADE A LOT OF SENCE. BY THE WAY RONIE LUZNAR AND THE POLKA PALS AS WELL AS MARK BOUCHARD ENTERTAINED THERE FOR US EVERY MONDAY AND WEDNESDAY EVENING. WE HAD A GREAT TIME BUT MADE NO MONEY. NEEDLESS TO SAY IT WAS A GREAT LEARNING EXPERIANCE.

I have become very interested in the Slovenian folk music on You Tube and would like to purchase some CD’s by the following groups. I am not Slovenian but I do love the melodies and arrangements by these groups. Ansambel Toneta Rusa, Ansambel Lojzeta Slaka and Ansambel Iskrice. If there is anywhere I can get some of the music from these groups I would surely be very grateful. It is unlike anything I have ever heard with the wonderful harmonies and the happiness that radiates from their recordings. I thank you in advance for any information you can give me as to where these can be purchased. Thank you , Ron

I love this post! I would like to ride that bike course around the house.
sounds fun. We just came in from our evening walk. I love the birds and we had racoons for pets when we were children. Not a good pet if you let it indoors. It pulled the stuffing out from the bottom of the couch and climbed the drapes and lots of other things. They sleep in the daytime and my sister would dress him up in doll clothes with bonnets and when he woke up he would run all over until the clothes came off. He stired my aunts coffee with one paw. Oh the stories! Lots of fun, well, my poor mom…

Ruth, I wish you wrote a book with your raccoon stories/memories. I know in advance they would make me laugh till I’d cry. Please, think about it, will you?
